Gardening is such a healthy fun activity in which to involve children, encouraging them to develop new skills, via multi-sensory learning whilst introducing the concept of science and nature when growing their own plants.  Choosing plants that grow quickly like sunflowers, corn and pumpkins help to maintain a little one’s interest. Selecting a variety of plants that have great sensory and textural qualities is also fun and a great learning aid for children such as 

• Touch  - the texture of the soil, seeds, flowers and petals e.g. Woolly lamb’s ears, succulents (aloe vera) antirrhinum (snapdragons)

• Taste – basil, strawberries, peas, rosemary, carrots, cherry tomatoes

• Smell – jasmine, sweet peas, lavender, pelargoniums, mint, lemon balm, rosemary

• See – vibrant colurful flowers – daffodils, marigolds, pansies, sunflowers

Keep a photographic log with children enables them to track how the seed they have planted develops and as they get older they start to learn that plants need sunlight and water to grow. Children are learning without even realising and being introduced to the environment and world around them.
